Common Warning Signs That Your Furnace Needs To Be Repaired Or Replaced

Heating your home with an electric or gas furnace is usually a very reliable form of heat. Most furnaces last for many years with proper upkeep and yearly maintenance. However, you may eventually need to repair or replace your furnace if you have used it for a long time. These are some warning signs to look for that may mean it is time to replace the furnace in your home.

Increasing Cost of Heating Bills

The harder the furnace works to produce heat, the more power it will use. This can lead to a huge hike in the cost of heating your home. Having your furnace inspected by a professional furnace repair person should be done as soon as possible.

Uneven Heating

If your home does not seem to be evenly heated, this could also be a sign that your furnace is not working properly. The heat should be evenly distributed throughout every room.

If one room is very cool while another seems overly warm, there may be a problem with the heating element in the furnace, the thermostat or the vent system. These problems may be repaired, or there may be a more serious problem that requires the need to replace the furnace entirely.

Loud Noises Coming From the Furnace

Most newer furnaces are very quiet when running. In fact, some more modern models may even be silent. If your furnace suddenly becomes louder or starts making unusual noises, this could mean there is a mechanical problem occurring.

It is not uncommon for older furnaces to become very loud when running once they have been used for many years. If your furnace is louder than normal, it should be turned off and inspected before further use.

Excessive Dust in Your Home

When a furnace is running, it should not produce excessive dust through the vents. The air in your home should smell and feel clean and should not be dry and dusty. Older furnaces do not put moisture into the air as they should. This is another sign that your furnace is not working properly.

If you have household members that are allergic to dry, dusty environments, they may have more frequent allergy flare ups if the furnace is not working properly. House plants may also be wilted because of the lack of moisture in the air.

To keep your furnace working for as long as possible, it is very important to have it inspected yearly by a heating and air conditioning or furnace replacement specialist. This should be done in early fall before you begin using your furnace for winter heating.
